OUR GARDENS
Born from the Ashes is Phoenix Farm Restaurant and Licenced Venue.
Words by Michael King // Owner & Host
Phoenix farm in, its current incarnation, was born out of the ashes of the Dunalley Bush Fires of 2013.
The Homestead had already been savaged by fire in 2012, and re-construction was almost complete when it was razed to the ground along with all the other farm structures, as well as the properties of 200 families in our local area on that fateful day.
Life recommenced as it has done for so many Australians post disaster in a refugee tent, and we started to grow our first produce out of the ashes. So rich in nutrients was the soil, that we were eating our own food once again within 6 weeks of the disaster. This 'paddock to plate' theme is such a vital part of our recovery mission, that we always aim to present food that we have grown on the property as part of our statement of what we are as farmers, as well as Chefs and Hosts to our visitors.
Aesthetically, the farm was akin to a War Zone as well as the rest of the district. It became even more important to harness our energy and vision to create a buffer, both visually and physically, to distance ourselves from the ravages of the fire and the eternal damaging winds that offered no relief from the travails of reconstruction. The gardens became the first and most important project to assist us with that plan. Unlike many in the area we had water and did our best to resurrect every remaining bit of pipe to transport it to where it could do most good. Words can not express the uplifting joy that the first sign of plant life would offer us - maybe a slight irony in that it was Bella Donna… Our Gardens today are an integral part of of the pleasure visitors experience when coming here.
Our first mission in recovery was to provide guest food and accommodation, now we are offering a more comprehensive Restaurant service and are happy to respond to your enquiry.
